Julius Nyerere was the founding President of Tanzania, East Africa. I photographed him in 1986 after an introduction made possible by trade union organizer Maida Springer.
I photographed Nyerere with his three granddaughters, Nguse, Anna, Eno, and my daughters Tyi and Jamē (far left). While there, I videotaped an interview with Nyerere and covered a wide range of topics. In 2019, my wife and I visited Tanzania and reunited with Anna Nyerere (standing directly in front of Nyerere), who was four years old when we last saw her in 1986. She is now an administrator at Alliance Francaise, a non-profit French language and cultural center in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Eno Nyerere works for the government of Tanzania in the city of Dodoma. Nguse Nyerere works for the Tanzanian Embassy in London, England.
