In 1990, Mandela was released from prison and went on a thank-you tour of the United States. It was then I stood face to face with one of the most remarkable men to walk the planet. Mandela was no longer an enigma but a smiling, joyful man waving to me and the crowd. It event was hosted by the Reverend Gardner C. Taylor at the Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. That's where I shot this photograph. It was a moment I will never forget.
